Nigeria is on the verge of launching a groundbreaking institute dedicated to the study and development of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement came from Professor Bart Nnaji, a distinguished figure in the energy and engineering sectors, at a lecture marking the 100th anniversary of the Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu, a Catholic institution that spans the regions of Anambra and Enugu states.
Professor Nnaji, founder and chairman of Geometric Power Group and a former Minister of Power, revealed that the initiative is now one step closer to becoming a reality after receiving approval from the Federal Government. The necessary legal clearances were obtained through the office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, as well as the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), confirming that the establishment of this institute aligns with Nigeria’s national interests.
Nnaji’s extensive background in artificial intelligence and robotics positions him as the ideal leader for this project. Having completed his postdoctoral fellowship in AI at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he went on to serve as a Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Director of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Later, Nnaji moved to the University of Pittsburgh, where he headed a consortium of universities focused on AI research, funded by the United States National Science Foundation. His academic and professional experience has provided him with the knowledge and expertise to drive the development of such a cutting-edge institute in Nigeria.
The journey to establish the institute dates back to 2017 when the application was first submitted. However, it took the Nigerian government four years to officially recognize the importance of such an institute and its potential impact on national development. According to Nnaji, the establishment of the institute will mark a significant leap forward in Nigeria’s technological landscape.
The objectives of the institute are ambitious and far-reaching. It will focus on the study of computer science with an emphasis on the technology behind intelligent machines and robots. The institute will also issue certificates to students, providing training in the design and creation of hardware that can perform autonomous tasks with minimal human intervention. Moreover, research in developing and analyzing algorithms for intelligent behavior will be at the core of its activities. These areas of focus are crucial for advancing Nigeria’s capabilities in AI and robotics, fields that are poised to revolutionize industries worldwide.
Dike Ejike, a mechanical engineer, power, and business consultant in Abuja, who also attended the centenary event, highlighted the significance of this development. He noted that it was remarkable how Nigeria took proactive steps to establish such an institute even before the advent of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. ChatGPT, launched by Sam Altman and his team at OpenAI in November 2022, has dramatically transformed the way the world learns, conducts research, and does business. Ejike praised Nnaji’s foresight in spearheading the initiative, recognizing the timing as crucial to ensuring Nigeria’s place in the global AI race.
Although Nnaji did not disclose when the institute will officially open its doors, or the exact location and structure, Dike urged Nigerians and the government to offer their full support for the institute. “This institute is a far-sighted initiative that can galvanize Nigerians into the AI race, which has begun to shape development in the 21st century,” he said, emphasizing the global importance of AI in the coming decades.
Professor Nnaji also shared that the Bells University of Technology in Otta, Ogun State, where he serves as the chairman of the governing council, has recently approved the establishment of its own artificial intelligence center. This development underscores Nnaji’s commitment to advancing AI and STEM education in Nigeria. He used the example of Vietnam, which now produces around 90,000 STEM graduates annually, to stress the importance of prioritizing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria. This emphasis on STEM, he argued, is crucial if the country is to leapfrog in terms of technological development and compete on the global stage.
Nnaji’s call for government support and the prioritization of STEM education is timely. Countries that invest in AI and robotics are poised to reap the economic and technological benefits that come with them. However, Nnaji pointed out that even countries like Vietnam, which have made significant strides in producing STEM talent, are still facing a shortage of qualified individuals to meet the growing demands of global technology companies like Nvidia and Apple.
