On Monday, gunmen shot dead a female security guard, Blessing Onana, and injured others during an attack on the Ngboejeogu Central Security office, Ngbo Court in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Odono Onwe, confirmed the incident in a statement he issued in Abakaliki and made available to journalists on Wednesday.
Onwe, who described the incident as cruel, said the hoodlums destroyed some properties and stole a motorcycle in the area.
“We are saddened by the cruel and bloody invasion of the Ngboejeogu Central Security Office at Ngbo Court by faceless gunmen.
“On several occasions, our security officers have been horrifically mistreated, humiliated, abused and killed.
“This demoralizes the frantic efforts of our vigilantes to safeguard our localities.
“Unfortunately, we mourn and console the families of the deceased security personnel who lost their lives on active duty,” he said.
The council president said the incident was reported to the police and the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.
“No one can ever undermine our determination to achieve peace in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
“We urge our people to be alert in their surroundings and report any illegal movement to the nearest police station.
“Ohaukwu is God’s land and such a calamity will never happen to us again,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) was unable to contact the police for comment on the incident.
