Abubakar Giro, a popular Islamic cleric, has died.

the leader of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Nigeria, Bala Lau, confirmed the cleric’s passing in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday night.

“We all belong to Allah and we will all return to him. Sheikh Abubakar Giro Argungu has died.

“The deceased (cleric) died after a brief illness at Birnin Kebbi. His remains will be buried on Thursday, God willing, we will announce the burial time later,” Lau said in the Facebook post.

Of the Argungu local government of Kebbi State, the late cleric was popular in the Hausa-speaking states of northern Nigeria.

He was in Kano last week on Friday, where he commissioned the construction of a new mosque by a philanthropist, Abdulkadir Rano, in the Rano local government in Kano.

At the event, he corrected a statement by one of his colleagues in Kano, Sani Ashir, who said opposition politicians challenging the Kano governor’s choice in court are enemies of the state and prayed that God would destroy them.

But Giro said there’s nothing wrong with politicians challenging their opponents in court.

In 2021, Giro was rumored dead, but posted a video debunking it.

His death was announced on Wednesday, just one year and nine months after the death of his Kano colleague Ahmad Bamba.
