The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has received two vehicles as a donation from the Canadian government.
According to a statement posted on NAPTIP’s Facebook account, the two all-wheel drive vehicles were presented to the agency’s leadership by Canada’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Jamie Christoff, on Wednesday in Abuja.
The grant supports capacity-building programming funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Speaking at the award ceremony in Abuja, Chrisoff said human trafficking had become a threat affecting society and the donation would enhance NAPTIP’s ability to prevent and combat it.
“The generous donation will enhance NAPTIP’s ability to prevent and combat human trafficking within the country, as well as underscore the commitment of both nations to work together in the global fight against human trafficking,” he said.
He praised the efforts of the Nigerian government and the Canadian government to work together to achieve a common goal.
NAPTIP Director General Fatima Waziri-Azi, upon receiving the vehicles at the event, expressed her gratitude to the Canadian government for the donation of utility vehicles.
He said the vehicles will have an impact with measurable results and effects.
He described the various Canadian government anti-trafficking interventions through the Ark Group, including development of the ireporter app, NAPTIP ON THE MOVE awareness raising among major carriers in Lagos, and other forms of assistance, as impactful and with measurable results.
“The donation of these four-wheel drive vehicles is a testament to Canada’s and Nigeria’s shared dedication to eradicating the scourge of human trafficking.
“These off-road vehicles are invaluable tools in disrupting human trafficking activities and preventing this heinous crime.
“Its robust design and off-road capabilities will allow NAPTIP officers to access remote areas, conduct extensive investigations and rescue trafficking victims,” said Professor Waziri-Azi.
