The senator-elect, Abdulaziz Yari, says that the race for the position of president of the 10th Senate will be based on constitutional provisions and not on anyone’s instructions.

Yari, a former governor of Zamfara state, had this to say on Friday while meeting executives from Tinubu Shettima Network (TSN), headed by its national president Kailani Muhammad, in Abuja.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr. Yari had declared his intention to run for the post of president of the 10th Senate.

The senator-elect described the race as a matter for senators, backed by the constitution to choose their leaders from within themselves.

“The presidency of the Senate is the business of the senators and on ‘D-day’ when we go to elect our president, we will do what is necessary.

“When we do that, we are for nobody. We are doing what the constitution says that we must carry our leader within ourselves.

“That is what the sections of the constitution state very clearly. What is going to happen that day will happen based on the instructions of the constitution and not for anyone.

“So, we are going to exercise our constitutional rights there,” Yari said.

He praised the TSN for supporting his cause to become president of the 10th Senate and said the group’s work in the area of mobilizing support for his cause was commendable.

According to him, this is a special session that we have with the leadership of the TSN. If we can remember, four weeks ago, I was in his office where I declared my intention to run for president of the Senate.

“I was there to seek their support and all the executives of the organization gave their commitments that they would give me support for this contest.

“And today, we must review what happened from then to where we are here today.

“From what we have been seeing and getting from the media, it clearly shows that the work is in progress and excellent. So the organization is doing very well,” Mr. Yari said.

In his remarks, Muhammad said the purpose of the meeting was to inform Yari how far the group had come in terms of mobilization, adding that it accomplished more than 70 percent of the job.

He expressed his optimism that the senator-elect who participated in the 6th Senate would, by the grace of God, emerge as president of the Senate.
