Amina of Zaria, as she is more commonly known, was born in the Hausa city-state of Zazzau in 1533.
All you need to know about Queen Amina of Zaria: Her parents, King Nikatau and Queen Bakwa Turunku, were her parents. Zaria was her younger sister, whose name the British would later give to a modern city in Kaduna State in the twentieth century. Zaria’s name was given to the city by the British. In addition, Amina had a brother named Karama who also rose to the position of king at some point. Amina’s grandfather began instructing her in the political and military affairs of the land as soon as she was old enough to understand, and she started her training as a warrior at a young age.
Upon the passing of Amina’s parents, her brother ascended to the throne and reigned for ten years. During this time, Amina gained a reputation as a leading soldier in the Zazzau cavalry and was known for her mastery of various military skills. One of the original Hausa states with the most territory, Zazzau was also one of the largest ( Kano, Daura, Katsina, Garun Gabas, Gobir, Rano). By the time that her brother passed away, Amina was well-known throughout the world for her infamous military prowess and fierce warrior spirit. As a result, she had earned the praise and respect of other warriors serving in the Zazzau military. As a result of this, she ascended to the throne of Zazzau.
Queen Amina’s reign spanned 34 years, and during that time she worked to make her kingdom the largest it had ever been. In the third month of her reign, she led approximately 20,000 soldiers into battle against the territories that were adjacent to Zazzau in an effort to expand the borders of her kingdom. She was successful in her conquest of every region and now controls a greater number of territories than she did before. Queen Amina built distinct earthen fortifications in the form of walls to protect her cities. These walls are known as the “Amina walls,” and she did this for each new piece of land that she acquired.
In addition to her mission of conquest, Queen Amina also established trade routes across Northern Africa. As a result, Zazzau became a major trading center, which contributed to an increase in the country’s wealth and prosperity. Queen Amina took advantage of her people’s skill in working with metal by introducing the revolutionary concept of equipping her army with metal armor, such as helmets and chain mail, so that they could fight more effectively. She was known as the warrior queen during her time.
Queen Amina passed away in the year 1610; the circumstances surrounding her passing as well as the location of her death are unknown; however, it is believed that she passed away in the midst of combat at a location known as Atagara.
