Kano State Government on Wednesday ordered the immediate marking and demolition of all existing structures built on the ‘Kwarin Gogau’ canal linking the Kantin Gwari textile market.
The creek is located in the Fagge Local Government Area of the state.
The government’s decision followed flooding which resulted in the destruction of property worth millions of naira.
The government also marked the demolition of the drainage lines in and around the Kantin Kwari market to remove all obstacles that prevent the smooth flow of stormwater and sewage in the area.
State Information Commissioner Muhammad Garba said this in a statement while briefing reporters on the outcome of the council’s weekly meeting, held at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Kano.

Upon receipt of the Kanti Kwari Market Flood Rapid Assessment Report by Commissioners for Works and Infrastructure, Idris Saleh, and Environment, Kabiru Getso, the council also ordered that all temporary structures mounted on drains in and around the market they must be removed with immediate effect, according to the statement.
“The council also resolved to remove sediment and evacuate all blocked drainage within and around the market, as well as remove construction materials deposited in drainage lines within the market,” the statement said.
