Court jails farmer for 10 years for rape

An Ado-Ekiti High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old farmer, Tobi Owajulu, to 10 years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl.

Police charged Mr Owajulu on June 12, 2021 with rape in contravention of Section 31(2) of the Child Rights Act, Cap. R7, Ekiti State Laws, 2012.

In sentencing, the judge, Adeniyi Familoni, held that the prosecution proved rape against Mr. Owajulu beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mr. Familoni did not give the convict the option of paying a fine.

”The convict amply deserves the legal consequence of his misdeed.

“Therefore, Owajulu Tobi is sentenced to ten (10) years in prison without the option of a fine,” he said.

To prove his case, the prosecutor, Taiwo Ajibulu, called five witnesses and presented the defendant’s statements, medical report and underwear as evidence.

The convict spoke through his lawyer, Gbenga Abiola, in his own defense but did not call any witnesses.
