At least seven people were killed by suspected bandits in the Karfi community in the Takai local government area Kano State.
Residents said the gunmen also kidnapped the community leader and wounded three others.
Kano police spokesman Abdullahi Kiyawa told reporters that security officers have been dispatched to the area and are following the criminals.
A journalist, Sale Hussaini, told reporters on Monday afternoon that the armed people launched the attack on Saturday at 11 p.m. and went directly to the residence of the traditional ruler.
He identified the village chief as Abdul-Hayatu Ilu. He said that one of the seven people killed was the neighbor of the kidnapped traditional ruler who was shot after raising the alarm.
Another five died in Tudun Makama, a neighboring community, where locals ran towards the bandits after one of their motorcycles was involved in an accident.
PREMIUM TIMES has learned that locals were shot and killed as they ran to help gunmen whom they mistook for law-abiding citizens.
He identified those killed as Tasi’u Birniyo; Ali Yahaya; Hashimu Amo; and Sadiqu Hussaini.
Others are Ahmadu Danlanbu; Bala Audu and Shu’aibu Agwar-maji.
Three other injured victims are responding to treatment at Birnin Kudu Hospital in neighboring Jigawa state.
Unlike other troubled northwestern states, Kano rarely experiences any acts of banditry.
