AU expresses concern over security situation in Africa

The chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed concern on Saturday about the security situation on the continent.

Addressing the 35th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Addis Ababa, Mr. Mahamat said that “the security situation on the continent today is deeply marked by terrorism and the dangerous resurgence of unconstitutional changes of governments.”

The pan-African bloc president said terrorism and violent extremism were Africa’s security challenge in 2021, with international terrorist links embedded in East, West and Southern Africa.

“The security situation on the continent now calls for a truly new approach that should challenge our peace and security architecture and its correlation with new destabilizing factors in Africa,” said Mr. Mahamat.

The president further said that financing the continent’s development through a vigorous fight against illicit capital flows and the establishment of African financial institutions remains a major challenge for Africa. (Xinhua/YAYA)
