President Muhammadu Buhari does not ask for the favor of those to whom he has given a political appointment, says the acting administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Effiong Akwa.
Mr Akwa said this in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on December 6, while delivering a keynote address at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week celebration, Akwa State Council Ibom.
“We have a president who will never call you on the phone, who will never seek the favor or send someone to him,” Akwa said. “That is why he does not accept anything deficient or accept no for an answer.”
He said other Nigerian politicians should emulate the Buhari lifestyle.
Politicians, he said, must live by good principles and persuade the electorate to embrace those principles, rather than buy votes.
“Politics without principles is a sin,” he said.
Mr. Akwa spoke out against the rotation of political offices, saying that such a practice should not be promoted above quality political leadership in the country.
“They are simply sending people to Abuja to represent them because it is their turn. Because of this, you end up sending nulls and people who should be sleeping at home. Enough of this rotation issue, enough of “this is our turn.”
“Any man who has done well should be supported to be president (of Nigeria),” he said.
The NDDC administrator also advocated for the timely conclusion of all litigation on electoral matters to allow elected officials to focus on their work, as well as to make it mandatory for those running for elections to have at least a first college degree.

Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor Moses Ekpo also spoke on the occasion.
