The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its willingness to participate fully in the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for March in Katsina state.
The president of the PDP in the state, Yusuf Salisu-Magiri, revealed this on Sunday while hosting one of the party’s applicants for the Katsina Central Senate District, Sirajo Aminu.
The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that Mr. Aminu was at the party secretariat to notify the district, local and state executives of his intention to run for the central senatorial seat of Katsina.
The president said the party had better and credible candidates for the presidential and councilor positions at any time the council vote took place.
However, he criticized the earlier announcement of the council elections by Governor Aminu Masari, saying that only the state’s Independent Electoral Commission had the right to make such an announcement.

Salisu-Magiri also urged the governor to focus on his duties as provided by law, adding that if he was allowed to announce the time, he could end up announcing the election winners instead of the electoral body as well.
According to him, the governor can only approve the proposed plans and budgets for the election presented by the electoral commission and not usurping its functions.
He said: “The PDP is a formidable national party. Therefore, there is no law-guided election in which the PDP does not participate. We will certainly participate. “
Salisu-Majigiri said that the participation of party loyalists to cheer on the candidate was a sign of unity and an eventual victory for the party.
The PDP president also urged members to be more united and formidable to win both the local government and the 2023 general elections.
Previously, Aminu said that his intention to compete for the seat was to answer the call to serve his people in the senatorial district.
He urged party members to abide by the law, be united and committed to the success of the party across the country.
