The Kano state government has confirmed the deaths of 29 people in Tuesday’s boat accident in the Bagwai local government area of the state.
This is even as the state has established an investigation panel into the immediate remote course of the incident under the command of Navy Captain Abubakar Muhammad.
Muhammad Garba said the government recovered 29 bodies, while another seven are in hospital and another 14 are still missing.
The accident mainly involved women and children who were coming from the village of Badau to the town of Bagwai for an annual Maulud celebration and who were overloaded on the boat.
“It was due to lack of fuel that the engine dried up and forced the ship to capsize, causing the death of 29 people.”
“We are going to take appropriate measures to prevent them from happening in the future and warn the captains not to gamble with people’s lives due to their desperation for big profits,” Garba said.
He added that the panel headed by the Commander of the State Navy, Captain Abubakar Muhammad, also has former SSG members Suleiman Bichi and others as members.
