UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced new measures following the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus.
Two cases of Omicron, a highly infectious chain of the virus, have been reported in the UK.
According to Johnson, all travelers to the UK will need to undergo a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test at the end of the second day of arrival.
Travelers must self-isolate until they receive a negative test result.
“All suspected Omicron case contacts must self-isolate for 10 days, regardless of their vaccination status. NHS Test and Trace will contact them.
“The facial covering will be mandatory in public transport and in stores, not including the hospitality industry.
“The JCVI (Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization) will consider giving boosters to a broader age group, as well as narrowing the gap between the second dose and the booster,” the new rule stated.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has described Omicron as a “variant of concern”, and has called on world leaders to take steps to contain its spread.
