The chairman of the House Information Committee in the Ogun State Assembly House on Thursday he said lawmakers adjourned until further notice “for one reason or another.”

Yusuf Adejojo (APC, Abeokuta Sur I) said the decision to suspend the session was made before House Speaker Olakunle Oluomo’s arrest on Thursday morning.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives arrested Mr. Oluomo at around 9:00 am at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

“The House was supposed to meet today, but due to one reason or another, our session has been postponed until further notice,” Adejojo said.

When asked if the postponement was due to the Speaker’s arrest, Adejojo said, “Well, it could be, but the information about the postponement was known before the Speaker’s arrest.

“But it could be because, as president, he is the one who will chair the session, so the postponement could be due to this,” he said.

PREMIUM TIMES has learned that EFCC officers took Mr. Oluomo to their headquarters in Abuja for questioning.

The lawmaker and the anti-corruption agency have been at loggerheads since early 2021 when House members were invited in for questioning over alleged financial embezzlement.

Efforts to speak Thursday with Assembly Secretary Adeyemo Taiwo and anti-corruption agency spokesman Wilson Uwujaren were unsuccessful.

While the employee’s phone was off, Mr. Uwujaren did not answer his call or reply to a text message.

Abdulgafar Adeleye, Oluomo’s spokesman, also did not respond to requests for comment.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported that the speaker is involved in a financial scandal that is currently being investigated by the EFCC.

After several invitations from the anti-corruption agency, the Assembly sued the agency and the former vice president, Oludare Kadiri.

The Assembly accused both Kadiri and the agency of witch-hunting lawmakers.
