A 17-year-old girl, Munachi Obasi-Igwe, was found dead in bushes along the Agbabor-Isu road in the Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in southeastern Nigeria.
Obasi Igwe, a relative of the deceased, told the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) that she was a high school senior 1 student.
Igwe said the girl was suspected of being killed Monday night.
“He was going back to his ancestral home, Amakporo, Onicha community.
“She was horribly murdered on Monday on her way back to Amakporo from our neighboring village, Agbabor Isu.
“We, the family, need justice. The security agencies should come to our aid. We don’t know what her crime was that led to her death.
“I was only 17 years old, I was a student of SS 1. We need justice. The police and the army should help us find the perpetrators of the evil act,” said Mr. Igwe.
Ebonyi police spokesman Chris Anyanwu said the command was aware of the incident.
“We are aware of the incident. The command has launched an investigation into the matter. I think the perpetrators will surely be put in the book,” said Anyanwu, a police superintendent.
Meanwhile, the state Information Commissioner, Uchenna Orji, said there was so far no evidence to link the murder to the herders.
The commissioner said there were no pastors residing in the area.
Orji said the deceased is believed to have been attacked by criminals in the area.
“We condemn the ugly incident. The unfortunate incident is the work of criminals yet to be identified, ”he stated.
