In a significant step toward the revitalization of Aba North, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, recently inaugurated a series of projects undertaken by the Mayor of Aba North, Ide John Udeagbala. The new administrative complex at Eziama, Aba North’s Council Headquarters, marks the centerpiece of these developments, alongside various infrastructure improvements that demonstrate Otti’s commitment to revitalizing local governance and infrastructure across the state.
Governor Otti, while commissioning the newly constructed administrative block, lauded Mayor Udeagbala’s efficient execution of the projects, noting that they were completed promptly and met high standards. He praised Udeagbala for upholding the administration’s vision and contributing positively to Aba North’s development. Otti pointed out that the appointment of mayors for the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) was done thoughtfully, and he expressed satisfaction that each mayor had justified the trust placed in them.
“In these 12 months, our experience with the mayors has been very positive,” Otti said. “We carefully selected individuals who have a reputation to uphold, and I am happy to see that this approach has been successful.” Otti’s administration is set on continuing its engagement with mayors who have performed well in their roles. “All mayors who have excelled in their duties will continue to be part of this administration because we need competent individuals who can deliver,” the governor assured.
Beyond the immediate accomplishments in Aba North, Otti turned his focus toward the Osisioma Interchange, a project commissioned by the previous administration in 2022. The interchange, although relatively new, has developed structural issues that have raised public safety concerns. Otti acknowledged these issues and revealed that he had directed the Commissioner for Works to assess and repair the failing sections immediately. “We cannot afford to let the bridge deteriorate further. We are unsure why it started to weaken just two years after completion, but we’ll identify the root cause and restore it,” he affirmed. Otti underscored his belief that government is a continuum, committing his administration to fix any legacy projects that may have fallen short of quality standards.
In his broader plan for Aba, Otti outlined initiatives aimed at restoring the city’s reputation as a bustling industrial and commercial hub. Notably, the administration has begun efforts to repair key roads within Aba’s core, and Otti announced plans to expand these efforts into the city’s side streets. “All the roads branching off Port Harcourt Road, Azikiwe Road, and others will be rehabilitated. By next month, we will begin work on Aba Owerri Road, extending into Umungasi, and enhance the area’s aesthetics,” he promised.
Otti’s commitment to inclusive governance has been a hallmark of his administration, as he reiterated during the event. Abia State, he emphasized, welcomes everyone, regardless of their state of origin. He acknowledged the support his administration has received from Aba residents and encouraged them to participate actively in the upcoming local government elections, choosing candidates based on merit rather than party allegiance.
Key community figures voiced their appreciation for Otti’s leadership and Udeagbala’s performance as Aba North’s mayor. Hon. Aaron Uzodike, representing Aba North State Constituency, and Chief Emmanuel Nwaka, President General of the Anambra Development Union in Aba, praised the governor for entrusting Udeagbala with the position. They commended Udeagbala’s commitment and expressed pride in his accomplishments, reinforcing the positive impact his work has had on the community.
In his remarks, Mayor Udeagbala highlighted the challenges that Aba North’s Council Headquarters faced before the construction of the new administrative complex. Previously, a lack of proper office space had hampered staff productivity, a problem now resolved with the inauguration of the new facility. He expressed his determination to emulate the state’s development blueprint, led by Governor Otti, and listed additional projects that he spearheaded, including the construction of roads, the renovation of a pedestrian bridge, the improvement of a maternity center, and the provision of a solar-powered cold room for vaccine storage.
Udeagbala credited Otti for providing consistent support, noting that the governor had not declined any of his requests throughout the project execution. This partnership, he explained, made it possible to accomplish these projects that now benefit the community directly.
The inauguration event was attended by key state dignitaries, including members of the Abia State House of Assembly led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, several LGA mayors, traditional rulers, and industry leaders.
