A Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the Kano State Government pay the incorporated trustees of Eid Grand shop owners N30 billion as compensation for the illegal demolition of their properties.
The court ruled that the state government carried out the demolition exercise without resorting to the law.
Newslodge reported how Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has ordered the demolition of certain properties across Kano metropolis, which he claims were sold illegally by the previous government.
Among the demolished properties was a three-storey building with 90 shops at a Nasarawa GRA racecourse. The Daula Hotel is a three-star hotel rebuilt by the Ganduje administration within the framework of a Public Private Partnership.
The government also demolished another structure, at the Hajj camp, sold to individuals by the previous state administration and tents erected in parts of Kofar Mata, the Eid prayer site.
The owners of the demolished properties sued the Kano government over the demolition.
Some of the traders under the umbrella of the Incorporated Trustees of ‘Massallacin Eid Shop Owners’ challenged the demolition in the Federal High Court.

Justice Samuel Amobeda ordered the government to pay the traders N30 billion as compensation for the illegal demolition of their properties.
The judge said the action of the Kano State Government against the petitioners was barbaric and unconstitutional.
