The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) has shortlisted Funmi Falana, a women and children’s rights activist, and 68 other lawyers for the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The preselection is the first part of a two-stage process for 2023.
The shortlisted candidates will face interviews by the LPPC in October, at the end of which the final list of selected candidates will emerge.
Supreme Court Chief Registrar Hajo Bello, who is also LPPC secretary, released the shortlist circulating online on Thursday.
Supreme Court spokesperson Festus Akande on Friday confirmed to Newslodge the authenticity of the shortlisted candidates.
The list is made up of 57 lawyers in the lawyer category and 12 in the academic category.
The shortlist announcement comes with an invitation to the public “to comment on the integrity, reputation and competence” of the candidates.
The final list of shortlisted candidates will be announced in October.
Each year, selected candidates are sworn in during the Supreme Court’s new legal year ceremony, which typically takes place between September and October.
This document informs that the LPPC, a body chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and established to annually award the prestigious rank to deserving lawyers, is domiciled at the Supreme Court.
Some of the shortlisted candidates include Mrs Falana, wife of human rights lawyer Femi Falana; Kayode Ajulo, a public interest lawyer; Emmanuel Enoidem, former Peoples Democratic Party (PPD) legal advisor; and Agada Elachi, former President of the Abuja Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
