Delighted to have the African Union as a permanent member. Indeed, a milestone for the G20 family,” the Office of the Prime Minister of India said in a post on social media platform X.
Modi said AU membership will strengthen the G20 and also strengthen the voice of the Global South. A position that India has promoted since assuming the G20 presidency.
AU President Moussa Faki, welcoming the AU’s membership in the G20, said: “This membership, which we have been advocating for for a long time, will provide an enabling framework to expand advocacy for continent and its effective contribution to facing global challenges”.

India assumed the presidency of the G20 in December 2022. The G20 is a group of 19 countries and the European Union whose focus is the global economy and development.
The G20 was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a forum for Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors to discuss global economic and financial issues.
The G20 was elevated to the level of Heads of State and Government in the wake of the 2007 global economic and financial crisis and, in 2009, was designated the “main forum for international economic cooperation.”
The G20 Summit is held annually, under the leadership of a rotating presidency. Initially, the G20 focused largely on broad macroeconomic issues, but has since expanded its agenda to include trade, climate change, sustainable development, health, agriculture, energy, environment, climate change. and the fight against corruption.
