A police officer who allegedly shot Bakare Idris, a craftsman in Lagos, has been sacked and is scheduled to stand trial.
“The recommendation for the dismissal of Inspector Kabiru Odeyemi was approved today,” the Lagos police spokesman said on his Twitter account on Wednesday.
Benjamin Hundeyin said the removal will pave the way for his arraignment, which will take place on July 7.

Mr. Idris, who was shot Sunday in the Oregon area of the state, has been laid to rest.
The deceased’s brother, who spoke to SaharaReporters, said he was on his way home when the incident occurred.
“On Sunday night, my brother was coming from a party in Oregon. On the way to the Fela Sanctuary, where we stayed, he heard a shot when he was about to enter the house”, he narrated.
“He noticed that it was Kabiru (police officer) at a bus stop chasing people. When he reached a few steps to enter his house, he heard another shot again. The second shot was direct.
“Idris never knew the bullet had hit him. Upon reaching the front of the house, he fell. When he stood up, he discovered that something was oozing out of his body, which was his own blood.
“Later he discovered that it was a gunshot wound; We rushed him to a nearby clinic for first aid, but the policeman came and threatened us all with a gun as he took Idris in his bus and drove off.
“We went to the police station looking for our brother but Idris was not there. When the station’s DPO called him, he said that he took Idris to a remote emergency center where Idris died.
“The DPO questioned him (to find out) what he was doing at the location since he was not on duty that night.”
He further said that the accused officer often passes through the area to “harass and torment people.”
