President Muhammadu Buhari said Wednesday that anyone found guilty of Sylvester Oromoni’s death will face the full wrath of the law.
Oromoni was a student at Dowen College, Lekki in Lagos before his death. His parents said he died after being bullied by his senior classmates in the school dormitory.
However, the school claimed that Oromoni suffered injuries while playing soccer.
“The president assures that [Oromoni’s death] it should act as a trigger that leads to a permanent solution to this recurring problem, ”Buhari’s special assistant on media and advertising, Garba Shehu, said in a statement.
“This incident will be thoroughly investigated and appropriate punishment will be applied to all those found guilty.”
Lagos State Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu said Tuesday that key suspects in the case have been arrested. However, he did not reveal the names of the detainees.
Before his death, Oromoni had named five students who he claimed attacked him in the dormitory, inflicting multiple internal injuries on him.
The late student’s father previously said his son was beaten and fed a liquid chemical that led to his death.
Since then, the state government has closed the school while police continue to investigate the matter.
