Under his plan to transform transportation in Abia, the astute economist in the person of Dr. Alex Otti has promised to link major communities in the state through a light rail network that will commence from Ukwa connecting Aba, Umuahia, Bende, Ohafia and terminating in Arochukwu. A link on the network from Bende will connect Isuikwuato and Umunneochi.
Dr. Alex Otti intends for this project to run on a public-private-partnership PPP initiative.
Aside the move to revamp the road infrastructure in the state which for the most part does not exist and if available is in dilapidation, the plan to build a light rail system linking most parts of the state can only be described as stimulating a transportation revolution in the entire South East of Nigeria starting from Abia.
In the past, Abia was a state on the National railway corridor, enjoying the benefit of trains moving through its border’s from Enugu and beyond to Port Harcourt. Being mostly traders and business oriented, many from Abia took advantage of this opportunity to move goods through the rail line across communities far into territories outside of the southeast zone.
That line is currently moribund and almost in a state of abandonment.
But the plan for the light rail revolution by Dr. Alex Otti has raised hope that something even much better and modern is coming with the good governance which the labour party candidate will usher into office in Abia come May 29, 2023.
Across the country only two states have had the courage to mute the idea of developing a light rail network; Lagos and Rivers! Only Lagos has achieved a section of the system with the recent launch of the blue line.
Thus Abia under Dr. Alex Otti will be made to play in the big league of state government initiated railway system, massively scaling up the transportation capacity of Abia to move it’s people both for business and leasure within its border’s and connecting them by extension to their neighbours from other states and beyond.
When in full operation, the light rail network system will have the capacity to transport one hundred thousand Abians daily and ease the enormous pressure currently on the inadequate and dilapidated roads in the state.

When questioned on the enormity of the light rail project and how to achieve it, Dr Otti revealed that he was already in talks with interested foreign partners who have the technical know-how to commence the actualisation of the project as soon he assumes office as governor of Abia state.
The benefits of a light rail network cutting through Abia state can be imagined for some and for others it might be too good to be true.
