Addressing a distinguished audience at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Umuahia, during the Drug Control Committee Meeting on February 20, 2025, Mrs. Otti delivered a powerful message of collaboration, prevention, and rehabilitation.
With a deep sense of urgency and responsibility, Mrs. Otti acknowledged that drug abuse is a complex social issue that extends beyond law enforcement. “We must recognize that this problem requires a comprehensive approach involving education, prevention, and community engagement,” she stated. “Our focus must not only be on curbing the supply of illicit drugs but also on addressing the root causes—stress, peer pressure, and lack of awareness among our youth.”
As a champion of social well-being and public health, Mrs. Otti emphasized the need for a united front in tackling drug abuse. She proposed the establishment of a multi-sectoral task force comprising government agencies, civil society organizations, healthcare providers, educators, law enforcement, and community leaders. She revealed that Governor Otti had recently approved the budget for the renovation of the Umuahia rehabilitation center, a significant step towards providing professional treatment and support for individuals struggling with addiction.
Mrs. Otti’s advocacy extends beyond policy recommendations; her passion for the welfare of Abia’s citizens is evident in her empathetic call for reducing the stigma associated with addiction.
