In his keynote address at the stakeholder engagement session on climate change put together by the Abia State Ministry of Enviroment on Thursday, August 29, at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address the threats of climate change. He highlighted the devastating impacts of climate change, including irregular weather patterns, drought, desert encroachment, food insecurity, displacement, and poverty. The Governor’s speech demonstrated a clear understanding of the climate crisis and its far-reaching consequences.
Governor Otti acknowledged the skepticism surrounding climate change but stressed that it is a real threat requiring immediate attention. He emphasized the importance of understanding human activities’ impact on the environment and the need for a paradigm shift in how we interact with nature. This shift involves recognizing the intricate connections between human well-being, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
The Governor outlined his administration’s efforts to address climate change, including:
- Establishment of a Climate Change Department to coordinate climate action and policy formulation.
