He Lagos State Government The Alayabiagba market in Ajegunle reopened on Saturday following traders’ compliance with environmental sanitation laws that previously caused the market to close.
The State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection highlighted some of the violations that were addressed, including the placement of Double Dino Bin inside the market as well as the construction of a fence at the market entrance.
“Thank you, you won’t go hungry,” the traders said, thanking the commissioner as they ran towards the reopened market to continue their business activities, a video posted by Mr. Wahab shows.
The market was earlier closed due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage. The state government has also closed the popular Ladipo auto spare parts market, Oyingbo, Oke-odo and some plazas around Tejuosho market, over environmental violations.
The commissioner said the government will further ensure the sustainability of all health laws that guide the establishment of market spaces and urges traders to ensure proper waste disposal at all times.
“We must stop littering our market with waste, segregate and bag our waste and always patronize PSP operators, stop illegal dumping on road medians, sidewalks, open spaces and road setbacks and start watch our environment,” he said.
Earlier, the commissioner visited Lekki axis where many human violations resulting from construction works in the area were discovered.
The visit was carried out together with officials of the Lekki Residents Association (LIRA) to some black spots in the axis and to address issues related to clogged drains and clearing floodwaters that have taken over the streets and roads of Lekki.
The Commissioner said that the ultimate objective of cleaning and dredging of all canals and drainage channels is to allow easy passage of rainwater.
He said the government has made it a norm to continuously dredge major drainage canals and canals spread across the state to avoid flood hazards, adding that Lekki residents will be given relief as soon as they clear the clogged tertiary drains.
He highlighted that the ministry, together with other relevant agencies, will ensure the sealing of all commercial buildings and houses in Admiralty Way for contravention of environmental laws.
He said the poor state of drainage system management by these commercial buildings had severely affected the road networks in the Lekki axis despite the continuous rehabilitation of the roads by the state government.
He reiterated that the state government has zero tolerance for environmental abuse, especially drainage blockage, and said that a classic example is the canal in Durosimi Etti, which is filled with waste by buses parked next to the canal, saying that such an act It is unacceptable.
He said those who operate illegal car wash centers and mobile car mechanics who convert public spaces into mechanical workshops must leave such places immediately, particularly the illegal mechanical workshop next to the Parktonian Hotel on Admiralty Way.
