In line with global best practices, the pan-african conglomerate, Dangote Grouphas deployed cutting-edge technology and other measures to mitigate the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), and its impacts, in all its subsidiaries.
The Group, as part of its contribution to the GHG reduction campaign, has embarked on an information campaign to raise awareness among workers and host communities about the impact of climate change and environmental sustainability.
The company’s group brand and communications director Anthony Chiejina said in a statement: “To mitigate gaseous emissions from our production process, our new plants are designed to be resource and energy efficient.”
He added that the Dangote Group has invested heavily in modern equipment such as analysers, opacimeters and other continuous emissions monitoring systems used to measure greenhouse gas emissions in real time.
Chiejina noted that the company’s climate goals go beyond simply reducing emissions, but also protecting and regenerating the environment, through land reclamation and tree planting.
Recently, the company organized a workshop for journalists from the central-northern and southwestern geopolitical zones of the country to raise awareness about the imperatives of reporting on climate change and the environment.
The plant director, DCP Obajana, JV Gungune, told reporters that the company has implemented state-of-the-art facilities to mitigate concerns over climate change.
“We need the environment more than it needs us. Hence the need to sustain the environment,” he stated.
Dangote Cement Plc Chief Appropriation Officer Igazeuma Okorob told reporters in Obajana that the company has fully embedded concerns on environmental sustainability and climate change in all its operations.
The statement quoted the Head of Sustainability of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana Plant, Eseosa Ighile, as saying that several innovative strategies have been introduced to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Ighile said that in line with the company’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, alternative fuels (AF) were adopted to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
He added: “The AF project aims to achieve a 25 percent thermal replacement rate across all plants by 2025. We are working to install AF power systems across all our operating lines by 2024.”
According to her: “Resources currently used for fuel at the Obajana DCP include tire chips, used oils and agricultural waste such as palm kernel shells and rice hulls. We are also conducting technical studies on the use of waste-derived fuels (RDF) as a fuel source. Between January and July 2023, we have consumed more than 34,800 metric tons of alternative fuel materials for our operations.”
He said that so far, the company’s climate action activities include: monitoring water, waste and GHG emissions, creating a decarbonization working group and following guidelines from both local and international organizations.

The Head of Technical Training at Dangote Academy, Adedeji Adewale, said Dangote Cement Plc uses electrostatic prostetor to trap dust and recycle it into the system, adding that Dangote Academy plants thousands of trees every year.
He said Dangote Academy recently planted economic trees including mangoes, soursop, dates and orange trees, among others.
Adewale explained that tree planting has the potential to protect the climate, regenerate the environment and improve the health condition of the inhabitants.
