Senate Leader Orji Kalu has written to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Labor Committee (NWC) and 108 senators-elect about his interest in becoming president of the Senate.

This was contained in a statement released by the Senate House Head Media Office on Monday in Abuja.

Kalu, however, refuted the report that senators-elect from the Southeast endorsed him.

According to him, the senators-elect from the Southeast only met to make a demand to the president-elect and the party and even to endorse nobody.

Mr. Kalu, in letters he personally signed and addressed to each of NWC’s members and senators-elect, said that he is offering himself for the position with sincerity of heart, humility and candor.

He explained that his apparent inactivity in the race for the Senate presidency was due to a month-long mourning for his late wife, Ifeoma Kalu.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that attached to the letters of intent is Mr. Kalu’s Legislative Agenda, which has six priorities.

They are Economic Growth and Reform; Constitutional and Electoral Reform; National security; Improvement of Social Conditions and Well-being; Efficient and Effective National Assembly and Global Influence.

Mr. Kalu promised to promote and defend the constitution, as well as foster a friendly and cordial relationship between the executive branch and the judiciary.

“It is with a deep feeling of joy and humility that I bring you a cordial greeting and that of Abia Zona Senatorial Norte.

“My rise as a senator to represent Abia North at this critical moment in our beloved nation’s history comes with enormous responsibilities, the highest being making quality laws for the good governance of our people.

“In order to achieve these enviable goals, we need good leaders to guide the business of the 10th Senate.

“Leadership of a sophisticated Senate in the 10th session will need men and women with abundant shared vision, consensus building, charisma, credibility and pragmatism at the helm.

“This is why with the greatest humility I am writing to officially inform you of my interest in being elected the next President of the Senate,” he said.

“I make this offer to serve you and the Nigerian people with sincerity of heart, humility and candor.

“The greatest asset that I bring is the wisdom and experience accumulated over the years in the management of human and material resources.

“I promise to work for you, promote and defend the constitution and the party, and foster a friendly and cordial relationship between the party, the executive branch, and the judiciary.

“One thing is undoubtedly certain: by working together in unity and mutual love and respect, we can take Nigeria to the next real level of peace, progress and development,” the letter read in part.
