The Jigawa State High Court has sentenced four people to death by hanging for murder in the state’s Ringim local government.
The court, in a separate ruling, also sentenced Ibrahim Isah, a teacher, to life in prison for desecration of a minor.
The judge, Ahmad Abubakar, sentenced Salahu Yau; Aminu Salmanu; Salmanu Shafi’u; and Yusuf Sale to death by hanging punishable under Section 221(b) of the Penal Code (Cap. 3) Jigawa State Laws 2014.
The defendants, all from Kalawa Village, Ringim Local Government Area, were arraigned in court on one count of four counts of criminal conspiracy, trespassing, unlawful assembly and manslaughter.
Jigawa State Ministry of Justice spokesperson Zainab Baba-Santali, in a statement on Friday, said the offenses were contrary to Sections 100, 342, 97 and 221 of Penal Code Cap. 3 Jigawa State Laws.
“To prove their case, the Prosecution through their lawyer, Sabo Shehu, called 4 witnesses and submitted an out-of-court statement and a medical report while the Defendants testified on their behalf and called 2 other witnesses.

“In passing sentence, Judge Ahmad Muhammad Abubakar convicted and sentenced all the defendants to 2 years imprisonment or pay a fine of N10,000 for the offense of unlawful assembly punishable under Section 103 of the same code, 2 years imprisonment. imprisonment or pay a fine of N10,000 for the offense of unlawful assembly punishable under Section 342 of the same code and the offense of criminal conspiracy, the judge convicted and sentenced all the defendants to three months imprisonment or pay a fine of N1,000 for the offense of criminal conspiracy punishable under Section 96 of the same code. All were sentenced to death by hanging without the option of a fine,” the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Judge Abubakar also sentenced Isah to life in prison after being found guilty of rape.
He said the offense is punishable under Section 3 of the Jigawa State Penal Code Act 2014 (Miscellaneous Amendment Act).
Ms. Baba-Santali said the defendant, a school teacher, lured one of his students, a 5-year-old girl (name withheld), into an empty classroom and raped her.
He was arrested and charged in rape court, the official said.
“Judge Ahmad Muhammad in handing down the sentence stated that the prosecution had successfully proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, therefore he convicted and sentenced Ibrahim Isah to life imprisonment for the offense of rape punishable under Section 3 (1) of the Jigawa Penal Code Law. State Law 2014 (Miscellaneous Amendment), the spokesperson said.
