President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday that while the All Progressives Congress (APC) was working hard to retain power in recent elections, the combined opposition fell victim to overconfidence, the main reason he believed that They had lost.
Speaking at his residence in the House of Representatives, where he hosted the Progressive Governors Forum headed by its chairman, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, the president said: “They were already telling their foreign backers that they would defeat the APC. Our party combined confidence with caution, we worked hard and we won.
“Now his overconfidence is creating more problems for the opposition than for anyone else. They find it hard to convince their outside supporters why they can’t beat us.
“A combination of overconfidence, complacency and bad tactical moves made them lose, plain and simple. This has created more problems in their camp. Why couldn’t they get us out?”
He Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, the winner of the February 25 elections.
He defeated 17 other candidates, including Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labor Party (LP).
No less than five parties and one presidential candidate in the 2019 elections are currently challenging the result of the February election in the courts.
Speaking in response to a point raised by Mr. Bagudu, Mr. Buhari said: “A big reason why I congratulate Asiwaju on winning is because the opposition got support and false hopes from abroad and kept creating the impression that they will win. , which will win. us. The president charged the governors to stick together and openly address issues with each other.
“Try and keep solving problems. Be brave to openly discuss them with each other. This is the best way to survive politically in Nigeria,” said the president, who urged that “you (the governors) have a program to meet regularly and discuss issues and how to maintain the party across the country.”
Mr. Buhari spoke at length about his proposed retirement, saying that he intended to stay at home in Daura for six months before finally moving to Kaduna.
He thanked Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State for the infrastructure he has provided that would greatly improve life in retirement for him and the people of the state, adding that the Governor of Kano had also done the same.
Bagudu said the visit was ostensibly to say “Happy Sallah” to the president and thank him for the leadership he has given to the party and the nation.
With this being their first visit since the election, they congratulated the president on the party’s victory in the presidential poll, saying, “Congratulations, your party won the presidency, a majority in the Senate, and for being the leading party in the House of Representatives. These successes would not have happened without your support.
“History will kindly remember you. Around the world, the election is being held because of the turbulence in the region and the developing world, all courtesy of his leadership. We won by sheer hard work, the same thing you’ve always encouraged us to do. We thank you immensely for everything,” she added.
Governors in attendance other than Kebbi were from Plateau, Imo, Kwara, Ekiti, Kaduna, Kogi, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Jigawa, Katsina, Ogun and Nasarawa states.
In attendance were the Vice Governors of Kano, Gombe, Borno and Ebonyi, as well as the Federation Government Secretary, Boss Mustapha.
