The Federal Executive Council has reportedly approved the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Digital Inclusion Memorandum to endorse free broadband internet connectivity across twenty selected airports in Nigeria. The Federal National Council indicated that the project will be available across six specific geographical areas within the country where the main airports are located.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Issa Pantami emphasized the development of digital inclusion dedicated to serving the chosen airport with free internet facilities. A contract has been awarded to provide broadband at selected airports. 20 of them will be covered in the first phase of the project.”
Pantami’s confirmation revealed that the NCC had drafted previous memos prior to this current initiative that relied on the FEC’s permission to advance the installation of free Internet broadband through domestic airports. The Nigerian minister has revealed airports in selected areas to receive free broadband installation.
You have three airports in each geopolitical area. In the southwest, you have two in Lagos State, and one in Ondo State; Southeast, Imo, Anambra and Enugu countries will benefit; Rivers and Akwa Ibom states for South and South.” Insert Pantami to localize selected inland airports.
“The North Central region has the Federal Capital Territory and Kwara State; Kano, Sokoto and Kebbi states will benefit from the northwest, while Borno, Adamawa and Gombe States will benefit from the northeast region,” Bantami commented,
This report reiterates previous Digital Inclusion Memorandums drafted by the Federal Communications Commission (NCC) to approve the provision of free broadband Internet access across 43 higher institutions in Nigeria. A similar memo crossed the Federal Election Commission’s office approving the installation of free internet broadband at six select centers for small and medium businesses in the country.
Meanwhile, the approval of the installation of free internet connectivity across twenty designated airports across the country is the result of a council meeting that Nigeria’s Digital Minister had with the outgoing President, Muhammadu Buhari. The outgoing President of Nigeria influenced the approval of the NCC memorandum by the Federal Executive Council to commence as soon as possible.
