President Muhammadu Buhari met behind closed doors with Senate leader Orji Uzor Kalu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday.
Speaking to House correspondents after the meeting, Kalu revealed that he had officially informed the president of his intention to run for Senate president.
According to him, if the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) divides the position in the southeast, it will stimulate peace in the country.
Mr. Kalu, the former governor of Abia, argued that although the area might not have voted for Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, in the recently concluded presidential election, making him president of the Senate would bring peace and honor to the country.
Kalu also revealed that he discussed the stability of the ruling party with the president.
According to him, he suggested to the president that he take over as chairman of the APC Board of Trustees (BoT) immediately after handing over the position to the president-elect on May 29.
“The party should bring back our Board of Trustees or something like that so that Mr. President is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the party so that every four or five months he comes and sees how the party is doing.
”We cannot leave the party empty, it was done in the youth of APC so that the president continues to be part of the party’s conscience.
“We will have someone to turn to when we have problems in the game because only God saved our party, that is the truth.
“God saved our party because there was so much anger within the party, there is so much resentment. It is only God who saved this party.

“So, we need a man like President Buhari to stand aside, every three, four months, we will go and take him out of Daura and he will fix the party affairs, we will put him back, he goes back there and continues to search after his cattle and rice, and everything else.
“I’m not ready to take care of my palm kernel yet, I have more time before I start taking care of my palm kernel,” he said.
The senator noted that the ruling party faced serious crises ahead of the just-concluded general election, adding that Mr. Buhari’s interventions saved the APC from bankruptcy.
For this reason, he urged the president not to withdraw completely from politics but to assume the direction of the ruling party at the highest level to give direction.
