He Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered a further sum of N900 million for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Commission spokesman Wilson Uwujaren said the money was part of funds fraudulently held by some money depository banks since 2015 and refused to remit to the NHIS Treasury Single Account (TSA).
The commission, the amount added to the N1.4 billion previously released to the scheme on August 5, 2022.
NHIS was established in 2004 to provide social health insurance in Nigeria under an arrangement whereby taxpayers’ health care services are paid for out of common funds contributed by plan participants.
In January 2022, the agency partnered with the EFCC to enhance the digital transformation regarding health insurance.
Remember that on February 10, 2022, the commission announced that it had remitted a tranche of N1.5 billion to the scheme in a similar way.
This, the commission said, was preceded by N1. 3 billion also helped the NHIS recapture the agency from the banks in September 2021.
‘NHIS’ N12 billion trapped’
NHIS had announced in August 2021 that more than N12 billion belonging to it was stuck in the bank.
NHIS Executive Secretary Muhammad Sambo said this during a courtesy call on EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa on July 29, 2021, according to an EFCC statement.
Sambo said during the meeting that EFCC had helped the agency recover N5.4 billion thereafter.
“In total, the EFCC has been able to recover around N5.4 billion for us out of the N12.085 billion that has been trapped; this is a monumental achievement and that is why we will make sure we continue to be good partners for the EFCC,” he said.
Mr. Sambo praised the EFCC for the recoveries and assured that each recovered kobo will be used judiciously.

This is in addition to the N1,400,000,000 (One trillion, four hundred million naira) previously released to the Scheme on 5th August 2022.

The NHIS Executive Secretary, Professor Muhammad Nasir Sambo, on 29 July 2021 praised the Commission for assisting the Scheme in the recovery of funds fraudulently trapped in the vaults of some commercial banks.
