Ondo police on Friday confirmed the rescue of 50 children locked in a church cell in Ondo city.
They were reportedly found in an underground church apartment in the Valentino area of the city.
The children were allegedly kidnapped and kept in the church’s underground apartment for trafficking.
Police arrested the church’s pastor, whose name has not yet been released, while the children were detained.
The police also arrested some members of the church.
Funmilayo Odunlami, the police spokesman in the state, told PREMIUM TIMES that preliminary investigations were ongoing and details would be available shortly.
She said more work was being done to establish the details of the crime.

Ms. Odunlami stated that the victims had been taken to the state CID at the Akure command headquarters.
“The command is aware of a suspected kidnapping case in the Valentino area of Ondo city,” he said.
“We exhort the good people of State of Ondo rest assured that the State Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the case.”
