Daniil Medvedev returned to the top of the men’s tennis world rankings on Monday.
He should increase his lead after Wimbledon, despite being Russian and unable to play there.
Medvedev, runner-up on Sunday at the Dutch tournament in Rosmalen, dethroned Novak Djokovic.
Now he leads the last ATP list ahead of the German Alexander Zverev and the Serbian Djokovic.
It is the first time since 2003 that none of the big four Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray are in the top two of the rankings.
Wimbledon starts in a fortnight and there will be no ranking points available there for men and women.
This comes as the ATP and Women’s WTA are protesting the tournament’s decision to ban players from Russia and Belarus, in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These players can compete as neutrals in other tournaments.
As a result, Djokovic will lose all points from his 2021 Wimbledon title, even if he wins again, in the post-Wimbledon standings based on the results of the last 52 weeks.
Medvedev and Zverev, who are also not in London due to injury, will lose fewer points because they were eliminated in the fourth round last year.
Medvedev first held the number one spot briefly in February.
