the police in Ogun State On Thursday he confirmed the arrest of a 36-year-old man, Kingsley Essien, for allegedly trafficking his wife to Mali and selling their two-year-old son for N600,000.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, a police spokesman in the state, said in a statement that the suspect’s wife, Bright Essien, reported the matter to the Agbara Division Police Headquarters.
Police said Ms Essien reported the matter in October of last year. She said that her husband, Mr. Essien, informed her that he had secured a job for her in Bamako, Mali.
She said that her husband said that he had helped many people in the past to travel to that country in search of greener pastures.
She added that being her husband; she did not suspect foul play until she arrived in Mali. In Mali, she said she discovered that her husband had sold her to a female-led trafficking cartel for N1.4 million.
“While in Mali, she was forced into prostitution, but then she arrived at the Nigerian embassy in Bamako, where she was helped back to Nigeria,” police said.
“Upon arriving in Nigeria, she discovered that her two-year-old son in the care of her husband was nowhere to be found.”
The police spokesman said that the matter was reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Agbara Division, Abiodun Salau, who had to send his detectives to chase and arrest the suspect.
He added that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the crime. He also confessed that he sold the two year old to someone for N600.00.
State Police Commissioner Lanre Bankole ordered the transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department’s anti-child labor and human trafficking unit for investigation.
The CP also ordered the police to locate and arrest the alleged buyer of the child to recover the kidnapped child.
