Abdul Abiola, one of the sons of the late MKO chief Abiola, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the circumstances that led to his father’s death.
The young Abiola said this through his Twitter account @AbdulMKO on Tuesday.
Abiola said it was time for Nigerians to learn the truth about the circumstances that led to his father’s death, adding that “the president should investigate the files.”
This, he said, would help the President to unravel the mystery behind the late MKO’s death, emphasizing that only such a move would bring justice.
“It is time for the Nigerian people to know the truth about what happened in the elections after June 12, 1993.
“And also, which led to the deaths of MKO Abiola and Kudirat Abiola and other unsung heroes.
“I urge President Muhammadu Buhari to search the archives of our country so that justice can prevail,” he said.

Abiola was the presumed winner of the presidential elections of June 12, 1993, but his election was annulled by the then military head of state, Ibrahim Babangida.
However, Abiola declared himself president in what was called the Epetedo declaration, but was subsequently arrested by the government of the late General Sani Abacha, the then head of state.
President Buhari also posthumously honored Mr. Abiola with GCFR, which is the highest title in the land and exclusive to the President of Nigeria.

Buhari also declared June 12 as Democracy Day as opposed to May 29, which was initially the day it was celebrated.

Abiola, even dead, has become the face of that political era. Analysts also believe that the philanthropist serves as a symbol of Nigeria’s democratic experiences that grew out of that year’s upheavals.
