The International Press Institute (IPI), the Nigerian chapter, has announced plans to hold a one-day symposium in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day.
This was stated in a statement from his secretary, Ahmed Shekarau, on Monday in Abuja.
The UN General Assembly in December 1993 proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day.
To address the growing threats to the practice of journalism, the UN labeled the 2022 celebration “Journalism Under Siege”.
As the world body stated, this year’s theme will “highlight the many ways in which journalism is threatened by surveillance and attacks on journalists through digital media, and the consequences of all this on public trust in communications.” digital”.
Mr. Shekarau said that the IPI symposium, with the theme “What should journalists and the media in Nigeria do to stay safe, retain credibility and be sustainable”, will be held on May 6 at the National Center Office, Radio House, Area 8, Garki, Abuja.
He listed speakers and panelists to include former Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Director General Tonnie Iredia; the Senior Special Assistant for Media to the First Lady, Muhammad Zorro; The president of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ladi Bala, and the Public Relations Officer of the Police Corps, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Other media leaders, experts and reporters who will not be physically present are expected to join via zoom link, the statement said.
