The leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) launched a nine-man interim committee to oversee and coordinate the union’s operations throughout Lagos state.
Tajudeen Baruwa, national president of NURTW, said in a statement on Friday that the committee was formed after the dissolution of the State Administrative Council (SAC).
Baruwa appealed to the governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu sustain peaceful coexistence between the union and the state government.
“The body’s national leadership appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu to allow the existing harmonious relationship between NURTW and the Lagos State Government to continue and be extended to new union officers,” he said.

The move by NURTW management came weeks after the Lagos state government suspended the union’s activities in the state.
The government said it made the decision to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state.
The suspension followed the decision by the national body NURTW to suspend Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, president of its Lagos state chapter of the association for “acts of insubordination and serious misconduct”.
NURTW subsequently announced the dissolution of the Lagos State Council following Mr. Akinsanya’s alleged insubordination and refusal to apologize.
Mr. Akinsanya responded by pulling the Lagos State chapter out of the association.
Two weeks ago, the Lagos state government announced that it had established a Parks Management Committee to oversee the affairs of all parks and garages in the state.
The government appointed Mr. Akinsanya as chairman of the committee.
NURTW committee
The NURTW president said that the union’s interim committee was formed after the dissolution of the State Administrative Council (SAC).
Mr. Baruwa said that the interim committee was created to allow continuity in the administration of transportation activities.
The president added that the move was to ensure that union members continued to support the government’s master plan for transport development.
“The nine-man interim committee will be led by Mr. Fatai Adeshina, a stakeholder in the transport sector, and the committee will function for the next three months as stipulated in the union constitution.
“Other members of the committee are Mr. Sunday Yusuf, Abraham Onifade, Jamiu Erinfolami, Ismaila Ojora, Lekan Ariyibi, Murtala Lawal, Taiwo Azeez, while Kayode Agbeyangi would act as secretary,” he said.
Baruwa said the committee members were carefully selected to ensure sanity in the transportation sector.
“The union knows that it will effectively handle the affairs of the Lagos chapter after the dissolution of SAC, which was done to bring sanity to the operation of the union throughout the metropolis,” he said.
