Kano State Local Government Affairs Commissioner Murtala Garo, who was arrested and detained for tampering with the election results for the Nasarawa Local Government Area in 2019, resigned from his post.
Mr. Garo is believed to have resigned to join the race to become the state’s next governor.
Garo’s resignation followed a directive from the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduall political appointees and other public servants who aspire to run for elective positions in 2023 to resign before Monday, April 18.
Section 84 (12) of the Electoral Law of 2022, signed by President Muhammadu Buhari, states that political appointees who aspire to participate in the elections must resign from their positions before the holding of the primaries of the parties. politicians.
“No political appointee at any level may be a voting delegate or be voted on at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of nominating candidates for any election,” the section states.
In a swift response to the directive, Mr. Garo submitted his letter of resignation and indicated interest in joining the gubernatorial race in 2023.
Abubakar Ibrahim, an aide to Mr. Gantuve, announced that Mr. Garo will join the gubernatorial race in the state under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
PREMIUM TIMES in 2019 reported how police personnel arrested Mr. Garo, along with Deputy State Governor Nasir Gawuna, at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Kano State Collection Center after he tore up the result of the survey in the local government.
The two senior officials were arrested after they moved into the headquarters of the state matching center and began interfering with the matching of results.
The tearing of the results finally led to the declaration of the election as inconclusive by the electoral body.
The then state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Riskuwa Shehu, who briefed journalists, observers and party representatives, said suspected thugs invaded the local government collection center and disrupted the process.
“While we were waiting to reconvene with the intention of continuing the match, we heard a disturbing report that just as they were about to conclude, the match of results at the Nasarawa local government was interrupted and the result sheet was torn out and there was much. shock and the police had to rescue some people,” said the INEC official in 2019.

Other commissioners who have resigned since Mr. Gantuve’s directive was issued include Budget and Planning Commissioner Nura Dankadei and Rural and Community Development Commissioner Musa Kwankwaso.

Mr. Dankadei stated in his resignation letter that he resigned to pursue his future political ambition. It is believed that he will run for the House of Representatives seat for the federal constituency of Doguwa and Tudun/Wada.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kwankwaso, a retired police officer turned politician, has said he will resign to run for the House of Representatives from the Kura/Madobi/Garun Malam federal constituency.
Senator Barau joins the race for the Kano government
One of those who will fight with Garo for the APC gubernatorial candidacy in Kano is Barau Jibrin, the senator representing Kano North.
Mr. Jibrin declared his intention to run in the state’s 2023 gubernatorial race during a ceremony on Saturday to launch his campaign committee.
He has appointed a former lieutenant governor of the state, Hafiz Abubakar, as his campaign manager.
A 17-person committee will oversee Mr. Jibrin’s campaign in the state’s three senatorial districts, while another 27-person central committee will oversee his campaign in all 44 local government areas.
In his acceptance speech, Abubakar said the committee will soon launch other subcommittees including social media, student associations and a committee for the business community.
“We will soon reveal an outreach strategy for the Barau I Jibrin campaign that will involve reaching out to grassroots, business communities, religious leaders and associations.”
“All of you are free to start soliciting support regarding Senator Barau I Jibrin’s candidacy,” he said.
Mr. Jibrin thanked the committee members for their sacrifices. He tasked them with working closely with the campaign manager to succeed in the party’s primaries.
