The Nigerian Labor Congress (NLC) in Ekiti state has established a committee to examine the manifestos of gubernatorial candidates from political parties running in the June 18 gubernatorial elections.
Congress said the vote count would help it decide which candidate would best serve its members’ interests before deciding whom to support.
NLC President Olatunde Kolapo told PREMIUM TIMES in a phone interview Friday that Congress has yet to make a decision on the candidates who would best protect workers.
He said this to deny the accusation from the Segun Oni group, which had accused the NLC of leaning towards All Progressives Candidate candidate Biodun Oyebanji.
The campaign had issued a statement saying that the NLC had praised the government of kayodefayemi on performance and had promised to vote for Mr. Oyebanji in appreciation for what the Governor had done.
Mr. Oyebanji is Mr. Fayemi’s anointed candidate and is receiving his full support ahead of the upcoming elections.
Oni had warned the NLC to be careful not to politicize the civil service, arguing that their support for the APC candidate was ill-advised.
But Kolapo said the NLC had urged the Fayemi government to pay the workers their outstanding wages.
He said that those who raised the accusations were trying to force the NLC to participate in their political controversies.
“We are not supporting anyone right now,” he said.
“What we’ve done is set up a manifesto committee that will look at what the candidates have to offer and figure out which one serves our interests,” he said.
“That’s when we’ll know where to place our support.”
He said his statement to the state government was misrepresented.
