the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stayed action on warrants and motions related to the governor’s defection Dave Umahi of Ebonyi and his deputy, Kelechi Igwe.
The commission revealed this in a statement issued by Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman of Electoral Information and Education in Abuja on Thursday.
He said the commission met on Thursday and deliberated on a wide range of issues.
According to him, the issues include preparations for the Osun state governor election and cases on the defection of the Ebonyi state governor and deputy governor and 16 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) State House of Assembly. To All Progressives. Congress (APC).
Mr. Okoye said that the commission decided to stay the action in light of the conflicting rulings and orders it received from the courts of coordinated jurisdiction.
“It will be remembered that the commission meeting on Thursday, March 17 on the subject, decided to defer its deliberation on the Ebonyi cases.
“The commission waived the listed Memorandum to allow its Liquidation and Legal Services Committee to study the new processes in light of the old ones and advise the commission comprehensively.
“Since then, the commission has received more court cases on the same matter, bringing the total to 12.
“The commission also finds it prudent to stay action on the conflicting judgments and orders as it is aware of pending appeals and stay of execution motions on some of the judgments before various divisions of the Court of Appeals.
On the Osun gubernatorial election, Mr. Okoye said that the commission would not publish the Action Alliance (AA) nominations; African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
He said the commission would publish on Friday at its state and local government offices in Osun state the list and personal details of the candidates that the political parties propose to sponsor in the elections.
Okoye said that those who would make this list must be candidates who emerged from valid primaries in accordance with Section 84 of the Election Act 2022.
“The commission will publish the list and personal data of the candidates of 15 of the 18 political parties that held primaries.
“AA Nominations; ADC and APGA will not be published for not complying with the Political Party Operations Commission Guidelines (2018) or the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
“The AA did not present a nomination signed jointly by the National President and the Secretary of the party, while the ADC and the APGA nominated candidates who do not meet the age requirements for the position of Lieutenant Governor enshrined in the Constitution.
“The commission has already officially communicated this position to the affected Political Parties.”
