the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says former governor Willie Obiano from Anambra state is currently in custody in Abuja being questioned after his arrest on Thursday.
EFCC Media and Publicity Chief Wilson Uwujaren had this to say in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
He said that Obiano, who was arrested on Thursday at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, was taken to Abuja on Friday morning.
The EFCC spokesman said that the former governor had not been released, as is speculated in some media outlets.
“The former governor is currently in our custody for questioning, and I cannot say exactly when he will be released. I don’t know how long the exercise will last.
“All I can tell you now is that he is still in EFCC custody in Abuja,” he said.
Mr. Uwujaren, however, said that he was not aware of the arrest of the former governor’s wife, Ebelechukwu Obiano, as speculated in some sections of the media.
Mr. Obiano was arrested by the EFCC on Thursday night, hours after handing over to the new Governor of Anambra, Chukwuma Soludo.
PREMIUM TIMES had reported that Mr. Obiano was transferred from Lagos to Abuja on Friday morning.
The former governor, the sources said, would be questioned on issues related to corruption allegations, the details of which cannot yet be independently determined by PREMIUM TIMES.
It will be remembered that since last year the commission placed the former governor on its watch list.
PREMIUM TIMES reported in November last year that the EFCC, in a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) dated November 15, 2021, requested the Service place the governor on a watch list and inform him whenever you are traveling. of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.
