The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus driver who picked up the 22-year-old who was found dead on Monday says he was not part of those who killed her.
The driver was identified as Andrew Nice by Jubril Gawat, an assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Bamise Ayanwole, the lady, disappeared on her way back to Ota from Ajah on Saturday, February 26, after boarding a BRT bus with license plate number 240257 bound for Oshodi around 7 pm at the Chevron bus stop.
Nice gave his version of the incident shortly after he was arrested, in a interview with TVC.
The deceased was the only passenger on the BRT bus before the driver picked up other people on the way.
Nice said the three male passengers he chose were pointing guns at him as the deceased yelled for help.
“I picked her up from Chevron, and the other three guys in… when those guys show me their gun while I was inside, I can’t be myself anymore,” Nice said.
“The fears have kicked in, so whatever the man with the gun told me, I do it. I followed that Carter bridge, that flyover bridge, they ordered me to stop there, they say I should open the gate, when I open the gate, then when they go down, now they start to drag her, when I saw that she was crying for help, actually, I was helpless,” he said in broken English.
Mr. Nice said he thought the deceased was still in the vehicle when he drove away because he saw her cling to the plank on the bus as she was being dragged.
He said he ran away and couldn’t report it to the police because he was afraid.
Arrest
Earlier, Premium Times reported how the driver was arrested.
Gawat in an update on his twitter handle on Monday night, he said: “We want to assure the public that the suspect (driver) will be processed in court very soon to face justice.”
Mr. Gawat said that the driver was arrested in the state of Ogun.
