The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) says it is working on plans to challenge the impeachment of Zamfara state Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu by the state House of Assembly.
The party affirmed this in a statement from its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja.
Ologunagba said that the Chamber’s accusation was illegal and, as such, null and void.
“The PDP is reviewing actions in Zamfara in this violent assault on the rule of law and will take appropriate action as necessary.
“In any case, the PDP and the people of Zamfara will not allow the impunity imposed on the State to continue and the corresponding legal actions are being taken in this regard.
“Fortunately, our party has implicit trust in the Judiciary, which in the past has demonstrated its capacity and ability to defend the Constitution and the rule of law,” he said.
On February 22, the House had removed Mr. Aliyu from his post.
This followed the adoption of a motion by Majority Leader Faruku Dosara (APC-Maradun 1) at the plenary in Gusau.
The motion came shortly after the House adopted the report of Justice Haladu Tanko’s panel that investigated alleged cross-misconduct and abuse of office against the lieutenant governor.

President Nasiru Muazu, who chaired the session, ordered the secretary, Saidu Anka, to hold a voice vote on impeachment and all 22 lawmakers present voted in favor and the deputy governor was declared impeached.
Governor Bello Matawalle and Mr. Aliyu took office under the PDP platform, but the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 28, 2021.
Their relationship soured after Mr. Aliyu decided to remain in the PDP.
