Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the appointment of Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The approval follows a recommendation to that effect made by the Olubadan-in-Council and communicated to the Governor.
A statement by Governor’s Chief Press Secretary Taiwo Adisa said that Governor Makinde wished the newly confirmed Olubadan a peaceful and eventful reign.
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Lekan Balogun as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland”, said the governor.
“The appointment is in line with Ibadan’s Olubadan Chiefdom Statement as well as the unique and proven tradition of our people.
“On behalf of the government and good people of Oyo State, I wish the newly confirmed Olubadan a successful reign blessed with peace and unprecedented progress.”
Balogun’s appointment as Olubadan came weeks after controversies and uncertainties over Saliu Adetunji’s successor, the 41st Olubadan who died on January 2 at the age of 93.
Balogun, 79, a former senator, is next in line to the throne under Ibadanland’s ancestral arrangement.
Revocation
On a similar note, Governor Makinde also approved the repeal of the Amended Ibadan Chieftainship Statement, which governs selection for the Olubadan chieftaincy position of Ibadan.
The statement stated that the governor issued the revocation order, dated February 11, 2022, in accordance with the powers conferred on him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), in light of the State of Nigeria Judgments. Or me. High Court on February 1 and 10, as well as Sections 7, 20, 26 and 30 of the Oyo Heads of State Act 2000.
The four separate laws/White Papers approved for repeal were made public by the immediately preceding administration between 2017 and 2018.
The statement listed the laws/white papers to include the amended statement regulating selection for the Olubadan chieftainship stool, released in August 2017; the implementation of the White Paper on the revision of the Existing Ibadan Olubadan Chiefdoms Declaration and other chiefdoms in Ibadan, published in August 2017; the approval of the appointment of accounts crowns for the Olubadan in the Council published in March 2018; and the appointment of crowns of rhinestones and crown with obas published in March 2018.
