Court refers lawyers who fought for client to NBA

A magistrates court in Ojo in Lagos state has referred a dispute case against two female lawyers to their respective branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for action.

The Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports that the accused are Adaobi Emeka, 37, and Nkiru Nwanyawu, 40.

Messrs. Emeka and Nwanyawu were indicted sometime in March 2021 for being involved in a fight inside court premises over client representation.

The magistrate, Ademola Adesanya, made the referral on Monday based on advice from the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which stated that the duo had no case to answer.

When asked about their NBA locations, the defendants answered Badagry and Ikeja locations, respectively.

Mr. Adesanya accordingly dropped the charges against the defendants and made the referral.

According to the prosecutor, Simeon Uche, the defendants committed the crime on March 16, in contravention of the provisions of Section 54 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.

After pleading not guilty to the charge, the court granted them bail of 100,000 naira each with guarantees for the same amount.

Before adjourning the case pending legal advice from the DPP, on the day of the arraignment, the court ordered each of the attorneys to submit a letter of good conduct from their respective NBA branches.

Following legal advice read in court Monday, the case was dropped and the attorneys were referred to their respective NBA branches. (YAYA)
