The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Saturday, said that it arrested more than 60,000 traffic offenders on the roads of Lagos, between January and December 2021.
Olusegun Ogungbemide, Sector Commander, FRSC, Lagos State, made the revelation at a year-end party organized by the Badagry Corps Unity Command in Badagry.
According to the commander, in 2021, the agency was arresting an average of 15,000 traffic violators every quarter, that is, every three months.
“When you multiply them together, it simply means that I arrested an average of 60,000 traffic violators between January and December of 2021.
“Furthermore, during the year-end special patrols, which was between December 15, 2021 and January 15, 2022, the command arrested an average of 6,000 traffic violators,” he said.
Mr. Ogungbemide said the command recorded more than 100 fatalities on Lagos roads in the year under review, explaining that in 2022 the command would emphasize greater enforcement of commercial vehicles.
“For the application in 2022, we are going to put more emphasis on commercial vehicles, because we had a reduction in the rate of accidents on the roads of Lagos, but more deaths. “This means that there were more commercial vehicles involved, so we are going to refocus. our attention in commercial vehicles.
“So this year, there will be more law enforcement, more defense, and more interaction with other security agencies,” he said.
He urged motorists to always cooperate with safety agencies and road traffic management teams, to ensure a reduction in traffic accidents on Lagos roads.
“Lagos has become so aggressive after ‘EndSars’ and this is the biggest headache we have right now.
“The motoring public is not cooperating with safety agencies and traffic management teams and this is a bad trend for us.
“So I will just plead that regardless of what you feel went wrong, we need to bridge the gap.
“There must be trust between society and security agencies, to reduce the level of aggression.
“We should better understand this year that law enforcement agencies are established for our own security.
“We must cooperate with them, even when there are infractions, we must appreciate the fact that there is no leader who sends his men to misbehave,” he said.

Sulaiman Taiwo, Unit Commander, FRSC Badagry Command, said his command’s operational excellence was second to none in the entire sector in 2021.
According to Mr. Taiwo, God had been so kind to the command that a downed staff member, who was unconscious for eight hours in the emergency ambulance, regained consciousness and recovered quickly.

He said the command was able to restore three operational vehicles and build a water reservoir.
“We also have a solid inter-institutional collaboration, promotion of the cooperation of the interested parties, we painted the office building and delivered a generator set, television and DSTV, in the main hall of the headquarters.
“All of these accomplishments would not have been possible without the ongoing mentorship and direction I received from my sector commander.
“I also want to thank all the stakeholders of the command, friends, sister agencies in Badagry, for their immense and timely contributions to the success of the command,” he said.
Richard Sanni, Deputy Comptroller of the Badagry Correctional Center, who was the special guest on the occasion, commended the command for its cooperation with the sister agencies in Badagry.
