The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) The Alumni Association on Saturday in Damagaza village in Abuja’s Lokogoma district sensitized young people about non-violent participation in elections.
The theme of the event “Leadership is personal; start with me”, was part of the group’s activity to commemorate Martin Luther Jr. Day 2022.
According to the group, the main objective of the program is to expose participants to the principles of tolerance, dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and the values of using peaceful means to bring about political change and the resolution of divergent/opposing points of view.
“In light of the upcoming council elections in the FCT and the general election in 2023, we plan a series of outreach programs designed for young people to educate them on the need to resist the temptation of violence or be used by politicians to perpetuate acts. of violence and destruction of lives and property in the communities,” said Raheemat Momodu, president of the association.
Ms Momodu said the program is part of a series of events the association is embarking on in preparation for the upcoming general election.
“It is everyone’s duty to build a better society. And one of the key ways to do this is to enlighten people on various levels. We intend to do this at various times over the course of the year,” he said.
The event was attended by Fred Ohwahwa, IVLP alumnus and former managing editor of Guardian Newspapers; James Budebo, traditional ruler of Damagaza, his chiefs and the chiefs of the various ethnic nationalities in the village together with their women and young leaders.
Damagaza is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious and politically diverse community with a large population of young people and women.
