Jose Peseiro has been appointed the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigerian Football Federation. The 61-year-old was assigned the position after an NFF executive committee was held via video conference on Wednesday.
In a statement from the NFF, Peseiro will be an observer in the African Cup of Nations Tournament that starts on January 9 in Cameroon, with Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach.
“However, the Committee resolved that Mr. Augustine Eguavoen, appointed interim head coach, will lead the Super Eagles to AFCON 2021 in Cameroon and Mr. Peseiro will only play the role of Observer.
“It was unanimously agreed that AFCON is a good way for Mr. Peseiro to initiate a working relationship with Mr. Eguavoen, who will return to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr. Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON ”.
The Portuguese has had a 29-year coaching career, which began at Uniao Santarem in Portugal. He has also coached in Africa before at Al Ahly in 2015, and has coached the national teams of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
